George Clooney appears to mock Donald Trump at Golden Globes as he speaks French

At the 2026 Golden Globes, George Clooney didn’t just walk the red carpet he also made sure to show off his French, delighting fans and sparking chatter online about whether he was taking a playful jab at Donald Trump.

“Bonsoir, mes amis,” Clooney greeted the crowd, opening his remarks in French. “C'est un honneur d’être ici,” he added, which translates to “It’s an honor to be here.” Clooney’s Ocean’s Eleven co-star Don Cheadle joined in the fun, wishing him “bonsoir” in return, adding a lighthearted touch to the evening.

The star-studded night also had a political undertone, with Hollywood stars honoring Renee Good by wearing ‘ICE Out’ pins on the red carpet. Clooney and Cheadle presented the award for Best Motion Picture, which ultimately went to Hamnet. Many viewers took to X (formerly Twitter) to comment on what they saw as Clooney’s subtle mockery of Trump. One user wrote, “George Clooney mocking Trump for having mocked his French citizenship is hilarious,” while another quipped, “I know Trump is punching air right now, George Clooney's back in the US #GoldenGlobes.”

This isn’t the first time Trump has commented on Clooney’s French citizenship. Last year, Trump posted on Truth Social: “Good News! George and Amal Clooney, two of the worst political prognosticators of all time, have officially become citizens of France which is, sadly, in the midst of a major crime problem because of their absolutely horrendous handling of immigration, much like we had under Sleepy Joe Biden.” Clooney responded with characteristic humor: “I totally agree with the current president. We have to make America great again. We’ll start in November.”

France has welcomed the Clooneys warmly. The French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs released a statement saying, “We are delighted, like many French people, to welcome George and Amal Clooney into the national community.”

Clooney and his wife Amal, who have lived in France since 2021 after purchasing a farm estate, have embraced a more grounded lifestyle. Speaking to Esquire, George shared, “A good portion of my life growing up was on a farm, and as a kid, I hated the whole idea of it. But for my 8-year-old kids, they’re not on their iPads. They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”

On the red carpet, Amal shone in a striking red Balmain gown with elegant ruching, while George looked sharp in a black suit and bow tie. The actor, who has been married to Amal for 11 years, is nominated for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy at this year’s Golden Globes.
