Fox News makes major Donald Trump U-turn as guest rejects the president's Iran claims

Political commentator Nazee Moinian appeared on Fox News’ America Reports to critique former President Donald Trump’s recent remarks about Iran.

Trump faced scrutiny after claiming that “the killing in Iran is stopping,” comments that came amid widespread anti-government protests in the country, where more than 12,000 people are feared dead.

During the January 15 interview, Fox News host John Roberts played a clip of Trump speaking from the Oval Office:

“We've been told that the killing in Iran is stopping. And there’s no plan for executions, or an execution, or executions. So, I’ve been told that on good authority. We’ll find out about it. I’m sure if it happens, we’ll all be very upset. Including you will be very upset. But that’s just gotten to me, some information, that the killing has stopped, that the executions have stopped.”

Roberts asked Moinian if the cessation of killings might be slowing the protests. She responded, “Well, thank you, John. The killing hasn’t stopped. I think what the president is referring to is the case of Erfan Soltani, a 26-year-old protester whose scheduled hanging has been postponed indefinitely likely because the Iranian regime doesn’t want to further provoke the U.S. president.”

Moinian explained that Trump appears to be balancing multiple interests: assuring the Iranian people while also reassuring Gulf states like Saudi Arabia and Oman, who are concerned that instability could spill over into their regions and disrupt oil markets. “All three worries are valid,” she noted. “All politics are local after all.”

She also highlighted the broader context of Trump’s past actions toward Iran. “Any bold foreign policy move by this president has yielded results,” Moinian said. “The U.S. withdrawal from the JCPOA in 2018, the killing of Qasem Soleimani in 2020, and strikes on facilities like Fordow and Natanz in 2025 have all weakened the regime. It has gone from being paranoid and murderous to panicky and murderous.”

Roberts asked whether there might have been a moment to push the Iranian regime further, potentially toppling it, and why Trump seems not to be pursuing that path. Moinian replied, “He’s not choosing that path right now. This is a president who keeps his cards close to his chest while keeping adversaries on edge. No one really knows what’s going on in his mind. He values the element of surprise but also wants to leave a legacy as a friend to the Iranian people and stand on the right side of history.”
