Prince Harry savaged live on Fox News with simple four-word question

A recent comedy sketch has sparked a storm on conservative television, with Prince Harry suddenly becoming the target of outrage after making a light-hearted joke about Donald Trump. His festive appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert included a playful line about Americans “electing a king,” but the moment instantly set off a wave of anger across right-wing media.

Fox News commentators spent entire segments attacking him, despite the remark being part of an obvious holiday spoof. Martha MacCallum questioned why Harry would even comment on American politics, portraying his joke as a deliberate attempt to overshadow King Charles’s recent visit with President Trump. Her reaction echoed a familiar pattern, where even mild humour is treated as a political crisis when it involves Trump.

Contributor Carley Shimkus revived Harry’s past comments on the First Amendment, portraying him as someone out of touch with “regular people.” She argued that Americans don’t like it when foreign guests comment on their political system even though the reaction seemed far stronger among conservative pundits than among everyday viewers.

The backlash seemed disconnected from the actual sketch, which featured Harry wandering onto Colbert’s set pretending he was looking for an audition for a fictional Hallmark-style movie, Gingerbread Christmas Prince Saves Christmas in Nebraska. The whole segment was clearly designed as gentle holiday comedy, complete with sleigh bells and over-the-top Christmas decorations.

When Colbert teased him about the idea of a real prince auditioning at all, Harry responded with a tongue-in-cheek joke about Americans’ fascination with royalty and Christmas movies. The “you elected a king” line widely interpreted as a playful jab at Trump took up only a second of the skit, but it became the main focus of conservative outrage.

Harry even poked fun at CBS’s recent legal drama with Trump, again keeping everything in the realm of satire. Colbert crowned him the show’s “Prince of Christmas” at the end, reinforcing the comedic tone.

Yet within hours, right-wing media turned the sketch into a full political controversy, accusing Harry of disrespect, interference, and elitism. The intense reaction highlighted a recurring trend: Trump-aligned commentators often react more strongly to humour than to actual policy issues, especially when the joke hits close to home.

For most viewers, though, it was simply a light Christmas comedy moment and a reminder that some people take political loyalty far more seriously than a holiday joke on late-night TV.
