Prince Harry’s Jokes About Donald Trump Spark Backlash From Royal Expert Here’s What Happened
Prince Harry has stirred fresh controversy after taking a couple of light-hearted jabs at Donald Trump and a well-known royal commentator says the Duke may have miscalculated.
Over the past week, Harry has made two public jokes referencing the former president. The first came during his appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. When Colbert teased that Americans aren’t actually obsessed with royalty, Harry shot back: “Really? I hear you elected a king.” Many interpreted the quip as a dig tied to ongoing “No Kings” protests directed at Trump.
Just days later, Harry surprised attendees at a British American Business Council event in Santa Monica, where he joked again at Trump’s expense. While talking about the upcoming 2026 World Cup, he noted that England and Scotland had already qualified then added a pointed remark about Trump-era immigration policies:
“Next year, we’re looking forward to welcoming more Brits from across the pond… provided they behave, make it through customs, and past ICE.”
The crowd laughed, but not everyone was impressed.
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams criticized Harry’s choice to wade into political humor, calling it “unwise.” In an interview with Express.co.uk, Fitzwilliams argued that even though Harry is no longer a working royal, mocking a former president especially one with strong opinions about Harry and Meghan could be a risky move. He also noted Harry’s recent cameo in With Love, Meghan and his Colbert appearance, saying both added little value and that the Trump joke “wasn’t wise.”
Donald Trump has publicly criticized Harry and Meghan in the past, particularly over their decision to step away from official royal duties. At the same time, Trump has maintained generally positive relationships with the rest of the Royal Family, which adds another layer to the tension.
For now, Harry doesn’t appear to be holding back but his willingness to mix humor and politics is clearly dividing royal watchers.
