Downing Street has confirmed that Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer considers former US President Donald Trump's criticism of London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan to be "wrong." The dispute between Trump and Khan, which has simmered for years, flared up again recently.
The Prime Minister’s support for the Labour mayor came shortly after No. 10 initially chose not to respond to Trump’s latest remarks, in which he labeled Khan a "disaster" and "disgusting." On Wednesday, the Prime Minister’s press secretary emphasized Khan’s achievements, saying: “Those comments are wrong. The Mayor of London is doing an outstanding job providing free school meals in primary schools, improving air quality through the world’s largest clean air zone, and delivering record numbers of council houses. The Prime Minister is extremely proud of his record and proud to call him both a colleague and a friend.”
Trump had also told Politico that Khan was elected because of “so many people coming in,” a claim that Starmer’s team swiftly rejected, reiterating: “The comments are wrong.”
Earlier, a Downing Street spokesman declined to directly rebut Trump’s criticisms, highlighting that Starmer maintains strong relationships with both figures. The spokesman also rejected suggestions that the Prime Minister had failed to defend the London Mayor.
In response to Politico, Khan described Trump as “obsessed” with him and noted that Americans are increasingly drawn to London because the city represents values that contrast sharply with those in the US.
This ongoing feud between the two leaders has spanned roughly a decade, marked by repeated public exchanges and sharp rhetoric.
