During the FIFA World Cup 2026 draw in Washington, Donald Trump once again slipped into full “showman mode.” While the Village People performed YMCA, cameras captured the former president swaying along and a lip reader claims he gave Melania a playful four-word instruction in the middle of the routine.
According to expert Jeremy Freeman, Trump appeared to be enjoying the throwback performance a bit too much. He was spotted chatting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney and Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, reportedly saying he “missed” seeing the Village People perform live.
Freeman adds that as Trump continued dancing, he leaned toward FIFA President Gianni Infantino and said the music “makes me happy.” Then, glancing over at Melania, he allegedly told her: “Look at it, great job.”
But the moment that sparked online chatter came later, when Trump encouraged Melania to join him in the dance. The lip reader claims he said: “Come on, join in.”
And although Melania is usually composed in public settings, she seemed amused though not quite ready to break into Trump’s famous YMCA moves.
Trump’s long-running fascination with the song is nothing new. The Village People even performed at his inauguration, and lead singer Victor Willis once said Trump plays YMCA at rallies simply because he genuinely enjoys it.
The World Cup draw ceremony itself was packed with celebrity appearances, including Kevin Hart, Heidi Klum, Robbie Williams, and Lauryn Hill. Trump also received the first-ever FIFA Peace Prize, which he described as “one of the great honors” of his life. In his speech, he praised Melania and claimed he helped prevent multiple wars.
Gianni Infantino, meanwhile, praised Trump for what he called a commitment to “peace and unity,” though reactions to that statement online were mixed especially among audiences who remember Trump’s divisive political record.
Trump also couldn’t resist turning the moment into a punchline, joking that the NFL “needs a new name” since Americans call soccer “football” everywhere except in the United States.
Whether people loved the moment or found it odd, one thing is certain: the YMCA dance continues to follow Trump everywhere he goes and this time, even Melania wasn’t spared his invitation to join in.
