A senior foreign policy expert has issued a stark warning that Donald Trump now views Europe as expendable and may be preparing to pursue a self-interested alliance with Vladimir Putin one that could seriously destabilize the continent.
According to security analysts, the United States under Trump has shifted from being Europe’s traditional partner to a source of uncertainty. Some experts are now describing the situation as the most serious strategic threat Europe has faced since the 1930s.
Trump’s Escalating Attacks on Europe and Ukraine
In recent days, Trump has intensified his rhetoric against European leaders, labeling them “weak” and accusing the continent of decline. He has also renewed attacks on Ukraine and its president, Volodymyr Zelensky, accusing him of resisting a US-backed peace framework negotiated with Moscow.
Independent observers have warned that this proposed deal appears heavily tilted in Russia’s favor and could undermine Ukraine’s sovereignty. Reports suggesting growing pressure on Kyiv to accept territorial concessions have only amplified fears across Europe.
Trump has also reignited his feud with London Mayor Sadiq Khan, falsely claiming that immigration alone explains Khan’s election remarks widely criticized as inflammatory and misleading.
“A Crossroads Moment for Europe”
Professor Anthony Glees, a security and intelligence expert at the University of Buckingham, argues that Europe is now facing a historic decision point.
He warns that Western and Central Europe must carefully reconsider whether attempting to placate Trump is still viable or even wise.
According to Glees, how Europe responds now will shape its future for generations. He stresses that European nations must recognize the seriousness of the threat posed by Trump’s willingness to accommodate Moscow’s ambitions.
The Risk of Appeasing Putin
Glees argues that conceding Ukrainian territory particularly the Donbas in exchange for a ceasefire would not bring lasting peace. Instead, it would invite further aggression.
He describes Russia as a revisionist power driven by expansion, warning that Putin would not stop with Ukraine. In his view, history shows that appeasement only emboldens authoritarian leaders.
The concern is not just about Ukraine, but about Europe’s long-term security architecture. A weakened Ukraine could destabilize the entire continent for decades.
A Feared US-Russia “Pact”
Perhaps most alarming is the suggestion that Trump may seek a future built around a transactional partnership with Russia focused on economic gains and geopolitical influence rather than democratic values.
Experts warn that such an arrangement would sideline Europe entirely, leaving it vulnerable and strategically isolated.
Europe’s Urgent Choice
The message from security analysts is clear: Europe must urgently invest in its own defense, strengthen cooperation among democratic allies, and demonstrate that it is serious about protecting its future.
At the same time, they argue Europe should continue engaging the United States firmly but respectfully while making it clear that abandoning Ukraine or legitimizing Russian expansionism would have catastrophic consequences.
The stakes, experts say, could not be higher.
